PEARLAND, Texas — East against west. Oilers against Sharks. Two football programs separated by Highway 288, with the district title and the right to call themselves the King of Pearland on the line. This was more than another Friday night football game. This was bedlam at Alvin ISD’s beautiful Freedom Field.
Under cloudy skies and temperatures near 72 degrees, the rain appeared to ease just in time for kickoff. The atmosphere was ready. So were the offenses.
When the final whistle sounded, Shadow Creek had beaten Pearland 55–35 , surviving a relentless first-half shootout before pulling away with explosive passing plays and late defensive pressure.
First Quarter: No Time to Catch Your Breath
Pearland opened with a deep kickoff return near midfield, but the first possessions brought quick changes in momentum. Shadow Creek’s early interception handed the Oilers another opportunity, and Pearland made it count. With 9:18 remaining, a 64-yard rushing touchdown by No. 24 and the extra point gave the Oilers a 7–0 lead.
The answer was immediate. On Shadow Creek’s first play from scrimmage after the score, senior quarterback Travis Coleman launched a 64-yard touchdown strike to sophomore BJ LaFell Jr. Nine seconds after Pearland’s score, the game was tied 7–7.
Then Pearland struck right back. A 75-yard touchdown pass to No. 12 put the Oilers ahead 14–7 with 8:57 remaining. Barely a minute had passed, and the rivals had already traded three touchdowns.
Coleman later broke free on a keeper, setting up senior running back Julian Mathis for the touchdown that tied the game 14–14 with 6:23 remaining. The Sharks’ defense then delivered a quick stop, highlighted in the field notes by a tackle for loss from No. 55, before Mathis powered in for his second rushing touchdown. Shadow Creek led 21–14 with 2:27 left in the first quarter.
Second Quarter: A 35–28 Halftime Firefight
Pearland needed only seconds of the second quarter to respond. A touchdown pass with 11:54 remaining leveled the game at 21–21. But the Sharks answered again, as Coleman found LaFell down the sideline for a 54-yard touchdown. The extra point made it 28–21 with 11:39 left in the half.
Both sides kept trading blows. After a Shadow Creek fumble at the 38-yard line, Pearland capitalized with a 38-yard touchdown run on the next snap. With 1:56 before halftime, the rivals were deadlocked at 28.
That left Coleman just enough time to make one more statement. With 13 seconds remaining, he connected with senior Bryce Coleman for a touchdown, sending Shadow Creek into the locker room ahead 35–28 .
Third Quarter: The Sharks Create Separation
Shadow Creek came out of halftime looking for breathing room. LaFell took a direct snap into the end zone, extending the Sharks’ advantage to 42–28 after the extra point with 6:48 remaining in the third.
Pearland refused to disappear. The Oilers found the edge for another rushing score, trimming the margin to 42–35 at the 5:34 mark. They followed with a successful onside-kick recovery, confirmed after an extended officials’ discussion, and took possession at the Shadow Creek 49.
The third quarter remained chaotic, with turnovers and a 73-yard Jacier Pace touchdown run wiped out by penalty. Even with Pearland threatening, the Sharks held a seven-point advantage entering the final period.
Fourth Quarter: Addai Breaks It Open, Coleman Finishes It
With 11:48 remaining, junior wide receiver Jaylen Addai delivered the play that gave Shadow Creek the decisive cushion. Addai hauled in a long touchdown pass, reported from the sideline as a 70-yard strike, to push the score to 48–35. A penalty complicated the extra-point attempt, which was unsuccessful.
The Sharks’ offense was not finished. Coleman took matters into his own hands, keeping the football on consecutive runs and reaching the end zone with 2:09 remaining. The successful kick made it 55–35 .
Shadow Creek No. 5 Jaylen Woodard then came away with a late interception, effectively ending Pearland’s comeback hopes. With 1:06 remaining, the Sharks lined up in victory formation. The district showdown belonged to Shadow Creek.
A Navy All-American Moment for Jaylen Addai
Beyond the score, the evening also featured a special recognition for Shadow Creek’s Jaylen Addai , who was honored with a Navy All-American presentation. In front of the Freedom Field crowd, the recognition placed another spotlight on the student-athletes who make nights like this memorable.
By the Numbers: Coleman and LaFell Deliver
According to MaxPreps, Coleman completed 18 of 22 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns , with one interception. He also rushed 11 times for 68 yards and another score, accounting for five of the Sharks’ eight touchdowns.
LaFell was the most explosive receiving target, finishing with five receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns . He added a rushing touchdown to finish with three scores. Addai caught five passes for 108 yards and a touchdown, while Bryce Coleman and A. Starling helped keep the passing attack moving.
On the ground, Pace led the Sharks with 91 yards on 13 carries. Mathis scored twice on eight carries, and Coleman added 68 yards. Shadow Creek’s listed team totals included 188 rushing yards and 345 passing yards .

Pearland Refused to Go Quietly
Although the final margin reached 20 points, the Oilers were a serious threat for most of the night. Pearland scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters, answered the Sharks repeatedly, and pulled within one touchdown in the third. Their onside-kick recovery kept the pressure on in a game that could have swung again with one more big play.
Freedom Field: The Stage for a Citywide Rivalry
Some games deserve a stage as big as the stakes. Alvin ISD’s beautiful Freedom Field gave this showdown exactly that. From the pregame atmosphere and the national anthem to the thunder of each touchdown, the stadium provided a first-class setting for a rivalry that reaches across Highway 288.
For the players, families, students and fans who filled the night with energy, this was the kind of high school football experience that stays with a community. Credit to Alvin ISD for a venue that continues to showcase student-athletes and bring the area’s football traditions to life.
Shadow Creek had to earn every inch of its early advantage. Pearland would not stop answering. But when the fourth quarter arrived, the Sharks found the plays that mattered most.
Highway 288 may divide the two sides of Pearland. On October 30, the scoreboard at Freedom Field settled the argument: Shadow Creek was king.
