Texas High School Football Returns — And the Battle of the Creeks Delivers

We’ve finally arrived.
It’s 2026, and football season is upon us.
No more seven-on-seven. No more summer workouts. No more battling through that Texas heat waiting for the games to finally count.
It’s time to get it going again.
The college football season is here. The NFL season is here. But, as always in Texas, high school football takes center stage.
And there is plenty to watch.
Across the state, some of the nation’s top three-, four- and five-star prospects are taking the field. Several powerhouse programs enter the season loaded with Division I commits, while another class of young players is preparing to introduce itself to the recruiting world.
Here in the Houston area—and especially down south of Highway 288—the story is no different.
Alvin ISD. Fort Bend ISD. HISD. Humble ISD. Cy-Fair. Spring.
The schedules are loaded with early-season matchups, crosstown showdowns and district rivalries that will tell us plenty about what these teams may become as the season progresses.
Football is officially underway.
And one of the more interesting early-season rivalries taking shape brought us to Alvin ISD’s Freedom Field.

BATTLE OF THE CREEKS
Shadow Creek vs. Summer Creek
Over the past few seasons, Shadow Creek and Summer Creek have created a matchup that has quickly earned its own identity:
The Battle of the Creeks.
Summer Creek entered this year’s meeting having beaten Shadow Creek in each of the previous two seasons.
That meant the Sharks came into Friday night with something to prove.
Summer Creek brought back quarterback No. 8 Noah Spinks, along with one of his favorite targets, Benny Easter Jr., and once again arrived with plenty of talent on both sides of the football.
But this time, Shadow Creek had an answer.
And they didn’t wait long to show it.
THE SHARKS CAME OUT FIRING
From our position on the field, one thing became obvious almost immediately:
Summer Creek did not have an answer for Shadow Creek’s defensive front.
Spinks spent much of the opening quarter under pressure, while the Sharks’ defense disrupted the timing of the Summer Creek offense and refused to let the Bulldogs establish any rhythm.
Meanwhile, Shadow Creek’s offense went to work.
Quarterback No. 4 T. Coleman connected on an 83-yard touchdown pass on third down, helping push the Sharks’ early advantage to 13-0.
Then came another strike through the air.
With just 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Shadow Creek found the end zone again.
21-0.
One quarter.
Shadow Creek had landed the first punch—and then another one—and Summer Creek suddenly found itself trying to dig out of a three-touchdown hole.
Coleman would finish the night 19-of-30 passing for 314 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, putting together one of the game’s defining performances.
Receiver B.J. LaFell Jr. was a major part of that success, finishing with six receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown.
THEN SUMMER CREEK CHANGED THE GAME
The final score, however, doesn’t tell the entire story.
Because Summer Creek eventually found something that worked.
During the second half—and particularly around the middle of the third quarter—the Bulldogs changed their approach.
They started putting the football on the ground.
They increased the tempo.
And suddenly, Summer Creek began controlling the line of scrimmage.
Instead of allowing Shadow Creek’s defense time to reset, the Bulldogs began moving quickly from play to play. The faster tempo limited opportunities for the Sharks’ defensive front to rest and helped Summer Creek finally sustain drives.
Running back B. Cozey finished with 78 yards on 17 carries, while Easter recorded four receptions for 23 yards.
Summer Creek began finding the end zone.
And suddenly the feeling inside Freedom Field started to change.
The Bulldogs had life.
A FAMILIAR TEST FOR SHADOW CREEK
That’s when this game became particularly interesting.
Shadow Creek has always possessed the ability to create explosive plays. Big plays are part of the Sharks’ DNA.
But there are moments when a football team has to do more than be explosive.
Sometimes you’ve simply got to play football football.
Control the clock.
Move the chains.
Give your defense a chance to breathe.
Put together the kind of drive that changes the tempo of a game.
That remains an important area to watch with this Shadow Creek team.
After exploding for 21 points in the opening quarter, the Sharks weren’t putting points on the board at the same pace. Meanwhile, their defense was spending considerably more time on the field as Summer Creek’s tempo increased.
And with the Bulldogs cutting into what had once looked like an overwhelming lead, the question became unavoidable:
Was Shadow Creek about to let Summer Creek back into this thing again?
Not this time.

KEVIN JACKSON SHUTS THE DOOR
With Summer Creek threatening late, Shadow Creek’s defense was asked to make one more play.
Senior defensive back and Maryland commit No. 21 Kevin Jackson delivered it.
Interception.
It was the turnover Shadow Creek needed and effectively slammed the door on Summer Creek’s comeback attempt.
The Sharks added a field goal to make it 24-14, and that was it.
Ballgame.
After watching Summer Creek own this matchup for the previous two seasons, Shadow Creek finally flipped the script.

Coleman finished with 314 yards and three touchdowns through the air compared with Spinks’ 7-of-17 performance for 57 yards and two interceptions.
But the numbers only tell part of what we saw.
Shadow Creek showed just how dangerous this team can be when its explosive offense and defensive front are clicking at the same time.
Summer Creek, meanwhile, showed something important as well. The Bulldogs didn’t fold after falling behind 21-0. Their second-half adjustment gave Shadow Creek problems and turned what looked like an early blowout into a legitimate football game.
For Shadow Creek, there’s plenty to like—and still plenty to work on.
If the Sharks can combine those explosive offensive plays with the ability to sustain drives, control tempo and keep their defense fresh when opponents adjust, this could become a very interesting team to follow as 2026 unfolds.
But on opening night, none of that changes the headline.
After two straight losses in the matchup, the Sharks finally got their bite back.
This Battle of the Creeks belongs to Shadow Creek.

Tenner ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns, White added 98 rushing yards plus 145 through the air, and Warren put up 96 receiving yards and a score, even after a touchdown was wiped out by penalty.
